Most of us wouldn't think of buying a new car without a “test drive.” It's a serious investment, so you want to make sure you're comfortable with your new ride.
Like an auto purchase, the plan you and your dentist agree on to cosmetically enhance your teeth and gums — a “smile makeover” — is a significant investment. Wouldn't it be nice to “test drive” your future smile before you undergo any procedures?
Actually, you can — two ways, in fact. For one, your dentist could use computer imaging software that alters a photo of your face to show how your smile will appear after dental work. These computer enhancements are a great planning tool for making decisions on the look you want to achieve.
But even the best computer images only provide a static, two-dimensional representation of your new smile. It can't capture all the angles and movement dynamics of any proposed changes. That's where the other way, a trial smile, is a true test drive — you can see your future smile in action.
With a trial smile, your dentist temporarily places tooth-colored material called composite resin on your teeth to simulate the proposed changes. The resin can be shaped and sculpted to create a life-like replica that you'll be able to view in all three spatial dimensions. What's more it will give you a chance not only to see what your new smile will look like, but to actually experience how it feels in your mouth.
Creating a trial smile is an added expense and it's only available during your consultation visit — the dentist will need to remove the resin before you leave. But you'll still be able to get a good impression of what your final smile will be like. You'll also be able to take photos you can show to family and friends to get their impressions of your proposed new look.
A trial smile allows you to know beforehand what your dental work investment will provide you, and even fine-tune your makeover plan before work begins. With this particular kind of “test drive” you'll have greater assurance that you'll be happy and satisfied with the end results.

Would you like whiter teeth but aren't sure which whitening method is the right option for you? Our Apple Valley, CA, dentist, Dr. Samuel Kim, discusses the pros and cons of several whitening options.
Do-it-yourself whitening kits, found online and in stores, are the least expensive whitening option. Unfortunately, the old adage "you get what you pay for" often applies to the results. Drugstore kits contain weak hydrogen peroxide formulations that may not be strong enough to make a significant difference in your tooth color, even if you use the products for weeks or months.
Your results may also vary depending on the product you use. Brushed on products can be easily washed away by saliva, while poorly fitting trays and strips can cause gum and root sensitivity and increase the risk of uneven results. If you use an over-the-counter kit, it's important to follow instructions exactly and avoid getting any of the product on your gums or roots.
In-office whitening offers the quickest results, thanks to professional strength hydrogen peroxide gel. After a one-hour treatment in our Apple Valley office, your teeth will be much whiter. Results vary from person to person, but most people achieve a difference of at least three to eight shades. Sensitivity is less likely to be a problem when you visit the dentist's office for whitening services. In addition to applying the gel very precisely, we'll also protect your roots, gums, mouth and lips during the session.
You can also achieve professional results at home when we provide you with a take-home kit. We'll make impressions of your upper and lower teeth, which will be used to create custom trays for your mouth. You'll fill the trays with hydrogen peroxide gel and insert them in your mouth for about an hour. In most cases, you'll need to use the trays for several weeks for optimum results. Take-home kits can also be used if you've had in-office whitening services in the past and want to touch up your teeth from time to time.

There are a number of ways to improve unsightly teeth. You can, of course, replace them with dental implants — but not if they're still viable. You can crown them: however, you'll have to significantly reduce their structure for the crowns to fit over them.
There is another less invasive option for teeth with mild to moderate imperfections — you can cover them with porcelain veneers. As the name implies, a veneer is a thin covering of dental porcelain bonded to the outside surface of a tooth. They literally put a “new face” on chipped, stained or slightly gapped teeth.
You'll first need a dental examination to ensure your teeth are reasonably healthy and that you don't have any significant dental problems that could interfere with the veneers. We can then design your veneers' shape and color to achieve the look you desire. We can also create a temporary “trial smile” with acrylic replicas of your proposed veneers to give you a realistic impression of your future smile.
The next step is the possibility the teeth need to be prepared for the veneers. Although quite thin, veneers can still make the teeth look larger or bulky. To compensate, we remove some of the tooth enamel. Although much less than for a crown, this alteration is still permanent: your teeth will need some form of restoration from now on. There are also “no-prep” veneers, which require no tooth surface reduction. Ask us if this is an option.
We then make an impression of the teeth, which with other information will guide a technician at a dental laboratory to manually create your new veneers. This can take several weeks and requires a high degree of artistry to produce a custom product that will match your teeth.
Once they've arrived, we'll use a permanent bonding process to precisely attach them to your teeth. It will then be up to you to care for your veneers, especially not biting down on anything hard that could chip or crack them. You should also maintain regular dental visits and proper oral hygiene to keep your smile as bright and attractive as possible.
Although small in size, veneers can make a big impression. They can restore the smile you once had — or give you the look you've always wanted.

When the multi-platinum recording artist, songwriter and TV personality Jason Derulo was recently asked about his ideal woman, his answer covered a remarkably broad spectrum. "There’s no specific thing," he said, "so I think it’s unfair to say what my ‘type’ is." But it turns out that there is one thing the So You Think You Can Dance judge considers essential: A beautiful smile.
"I’m not into messy teeth," Derulo said. "If the grill has spaces and different colors, it’s not my vibe."
As it turns out, he may be on to something: A number of surveys have indicated that a bright, healthy smile is often the first thing people notice when meeting someone new. Yet many are reluctant to open up that big grin because they aren’t satisfied with the way their teeth look. If you’re one of them, consider this: Modern cosmetic dentistry offers a variety of ways to improve your smile — and it may be easier and more affordable than you think.
For example, if your smile isn’t as bright as you would like it to be, teeth whitening is an effective and economical way to lighten it up. If you opt for in-office treatments, you can expect a lightening effect of up to 10 shades in a single one-hour treatment! Or, you can achieve the same effect in a week or two with a take-home kit we can custom-make for you. Either way, you’ll be safe and comfortable being treated under the supervision of a dental professional — and the results can be expected to last for up to two years, or perhaps more.
If your teeth have minor spacing irregularities, small chips or cracks, it may be possible to repair them in a single office visit via cosmetic bonding. In this process, a liquid composite resin is applied to the teeth and cured (hardened) with a special light. This high-tech material, which comes in colors to match your teeth, can be built up in layers and shaped with dental instruments to create a pleasing, natural effect.
If your smile needs more than just a touch-up, dental veneers may be the answer. These wafer-thin coverings, placed right on top of your natural teeth, can be made in a variety of shapes and colors — from a natural pearly luster to a brilliant "Hollywood white." Custom-made veneers typically involve the removal of a few millimeters of tooth enamel, making them a permanent — and irreversible — treatment. However, by making teeth look more even, closing up spaces and providing dazzling whiteness, veneers just might give you the smile you’ve always wanted.

With professional teeth whitening, you don't have to be an A-list actor to get a critically-acclaimed smile!
The gleaming smiles of Hollywood's most famous have surely greeted you as you enter the checkout line at the supermarket. While their salaries can afford them some procedures and products that are out of the "average Joe's" price range, you too can have a beautifully brilliant smile thanks to in-office teeth whitening at Apple Valley Dental in Apple Valley, CA. Dr. Samuel Kim helps his patients in Southern California achieve million-dollar smiles for a much more budget-friendly price. Here's how:
How does teeth whitening work?
Your teeth look smooth, but they are actually covered with microscopic pits and grooves that give stain-causing particles a place to collect. Over time, your teeth can retain enough of these particles that they begin to take on a brown or yellowish color. The teeth whitening products used at Apple Valley Dental contain peroxide, which attacks the trapped stains with oxygen and causes them to break up into even smaller pieces so they can be cleared away. The result - a brightened smile that can be up to eight shades whiter!
Will store-bought teeth whitening products give me the same results?
The whitening gels, trays, toothpastes and strips you can purchase at any major retailer use the same ingredients as the professional products used by your Apple Valley dentist. However, the concentration of whitening agents - carbamide or hydrogen peroxide - is much weaker, which makes over-the-counter products less effective. Because you have to use them for much longer periods of time - several weeks or months - the enamel can become weak and cause tooth sensitivity. Having your teeth professionally whitened in Apple Valley only takes an hour or less, and the results are immediately evident.
